Using Tracklogs Tracklogs in .gpx format can be imported right into MapEdit. If you need to edit them first (cleaning them up, deleting redundencies, etc.) then I recommend GPS TrackMaker, though other programs can do it to. You can do some editing in GPS Map Edit too, but it's a little easier with TrackMaker. I've also heard that the new beta version of Mapsource can edit tracks, but I haven't tried it yet. Editing with TrackMaker If your tracklogs are in some format that TrackMaker can't understand, you'll need to convert them to .gpx. If you need to convert it, this site is the easiest way to do it. Run TrackMaker and choose "Merge File" and select your tracklog, and TrackMaker will draw it on the screen. If you right click on a track, it'll bring up a properties window where you can name it. Ignore the rest of that window because we'll be doing all that stuff with Map Edit. You can select a whole track by double clicking on it, or a portion of a track by using the arrow (select) tool to draw a box around it. You can zoom way in for precision work too. To add more tracks to it, just go to "Merge File" again and add another tracklog file. Track Maker can do waypoints too. You can draw new tracks or patch two tracks together using TrackMaker, but I prefer to do that in Map Edit. Save your work as a TrackMaker file so you don't have to import your tracks again. When you're ready to send your tracks to Map Edit for making your final map, save it as a .gpx file. |
